Geriatric Nursing Assistant

The main role of a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) is to provide basic care under the direction of the nursing staff. The role of a GNA can vary from resident to resident, helping with daily tasks that the resident cannot perform themselves. GNAs help keep nursing facilities running smoothly and keep residents happy. The role of a GNA is extremely essential in long term care. Compassionate individuals with a deep desire to care for others are needed to fill these positions.

Education & Experience:
A GNA must complete a state approved nurse aide training program, obtain Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing, and apply for the GNA Examination. Once an applicant passes the exam, their CNA certificate will be updated upon renewal to reflect GNA certification.

Certified Medicine Aide

A certified medicine aide (CMA) is a certified nurse aide (CNA) who has completed additional training and demonstrated competency while dispensing medications and applying or administering treatments under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. The CMA assists the professional nursing staff in assuring that standards of resident care, comfort, and safety are maintained by administering medications and treatments.

Education & Experience:
A certified medicine aid (CMA) must  hold an active and current Maryland nursing assistant certificate, have two years work experience as a CNA, or one year work experience as a GNA. An applicant must be recommended for the CMA Training program by a Director of Nursing of the employing licensed nursing home and be approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
